You've Got To Be Freaking Kidding Me

We have to talk to our son's guidance counselor about K's "poor attendance" at school.  He was out for two days because of our cruise.  The school does not accept anything but illnesses, medical appointments, or "justifiable family or personal emergency" as an excused absence.

Well, guess what, there is a "family emergency" brewing--his sister has very severe Senoritis and will be undergoing a curative procedure next Thursday, and we need to be there from Wednesday until Monday to make sure she recovers well.  Deal with it, school district!

The other day I took Pippi to school really late because she had a dentist appointment. When I checked her back into school the school secretary asked for a note from the dentist. I told her I didn't have one (I thought they would believe me when I told them my daughter was at the dentist. Apparently not.). The secretary gave me a look. I'm not sure what it meant. And then she informed me that my daughter would be counted absent for the day. I gave her a smile and said, OK. Personally, I don't care about their attendance policy. I'm easily irritated by the whole thing. I have to call the school and talk to a machine for every absence. And then I have to write a note to the teacher the next day. Really? Wouldn't just one of those things be sufficient? Just for kicks, all during kindergarten I never called the attendance hotline. No one even noticed. So it seems they just like to waste my time. Sorry for the tirade I meant just to say these four words: I feel your pain.

what is it with CA schools. I have another friend in CA who can't believe how much time we take our kids out of school. She said with 13 absences, child protective services would have her kids... eekers!

I bet you know a doctor who can write the necessary note to the school.

A friend of mine in Utah mentioned that her kids were in trouble with school because of their absences. I was taken aback, thinking that they must have been playing hooky, or something, but it was because 1) they'd all been truly sick with a bad flu, and 2) they'd gone on a short family vacation.

i find it pisses me off that their policy can usurp my parental authority.

That is BS! I mean it might be concering if he missed that much school once a month, but give me a break...I am SURE there are more important things they should be spending their time on!

CA schools are just desperate for their money. If the kids aren't there then they don't get their per diem.
